Who doesn’t love the holiday season, and the chance to spend time with family and friends?

Better yet, it’s an excuse to indulge in those naughty treats we try to steer clear of throughout the year (Advent calendar chocolates for breakfast, anyone?).

On the flip side, Australians gain 0.8-1.5kg on average over the Christmas period.

It might not sound like much, but researchers have identified that weight gained over the holiday period is rarely lost – even with the best of intentions when setting new year’s resolutions.

To ensure you don’t jump dress sizes in January, we’ve found a few guilt-free goodies to keep you on the healthy eating wagon. Not only are they tasty and suitable for the whole family (including Aunty Thelma, whose motto is ‘live for today’), they’re quick and easy to prepare. And you’ll likely find the ingredients in the fridge and cupboard.

Rice and Ancient Grain Salad

Warm Greek Lamb Salad with Crunchy Chips

Light Panzanella Salad

Prawn and Watermelon Salad

Other tips that should help you through the festive season:

  • Send everyone home with the leftovers. The less food you have to pick over the better, even if it’s healthy and low-cal;
  • Cut back on the booze. Spritz is in, and it’s totally OK to alternate an alcohol drink with sparkling mineral water. For those with a steel will, stick to the soft stuff all night;
  • Entrée OR dessert, but maybe not both – it’s your call;
  • If you blow your calorie limit, plan a Good Food Day tomorrow. It’s amazing how digging into just one low-cal meal can help you get back on track.
