Whether you’re working out at the gym, hitting the local park or getting in a fix in the comfort of your own living room, there is a huge number of apps available to help with all the right moves as well as the inspiration. Here are five of our favourites:

1. If you’re just starting a routine or have limited time, download The 7-Minute Workout for free. Using a series of bodyweight exercises in a HIIT (high-intensity interval training) format, it gets the heart pumping in minimal time.

2. If you’re not sure where to start, Aaptiv is the biz, although it isn’t free (there is, however, a free 30-day trial when you sign up for a year ¬– $100 – and you can cancel any time during the trial period). Whether you’re running outside, hitting the elliptical or fancy some yoga, it’s right there on your phone. There are more than 2,500 trainer-led, music-driven workouts. Filter using type of workout, your level and the time you want to spend, then choose one to suit. Download it, stick your earphones in and off you go, with your trainer pushing you all the way.

3. Want guided workouts, a supportive online community and a 12-week plan? There are plenty of apps and programs that fit the bill, but we love Kayla Itsines’s Bikini Body Guide ($55 for three months). Increase fitness and strength either at home or in the gym using her 28-minute sessions, follow the nutrition guidelines and ‘chat’ to others about their fitness journeys.

4. If you can never remember how many reps you did and at what weight, you need Jefit Workout Tracker. It lists more than 1,300 weight-training exercises, allowing you to easily track your workouts and create fitness plans.

5. For anyone wanting to get started on a running program, there’s no topping C25K (or Couch to 5K). You’ll go from absolute beginner to running five kilometres – or 30 minutes ¬– by training three times a week for two months. It’s free to download, but you can pay a little extra to get rid of ads or to include a selection of curated music.
