Weight watchers, fitness fanatics and even sceptical scientists swear it turns your body into a fat burning machine.

But what exactly is a ketogenic diet?

Even if it doesn’t ring a bell, chances are you have come across one of its low-carb incarnations: the South Beach Diet or the Atkins’ diet.

They are essentially variations of the ketogentic or keto diet, which is incredibly low in carbohydrates and high in fats, with the sole aim of putting your body into a state of ketosis.

This is a marvellous metabolic state that makes your body burn stored fat, instead of relying on carbohydrates as its default energy source.

To reach this magical milestone – which reduces body fat, builds lean muscle mass and enhances energy and mental clarity – the dieter must drastically reduce sugar, processed foods and starchy carbohydrates.

These are replaced with plethora of proteins, vegetables and healthy fats.

How the weight loss wonder diet works

When you eat something high in carbohydrates, your body breaks it down into simple sugars – mainly glucose.

On a non-keto diet, your body’s main source of energy is glucose, which it gobbles up. The problem with this approach is that if you eat food with too much glucose, your body can’t burn it all. So it turns it into fat and stores it.

This is not a ploy to make you overweight or obese. The body is an incredibly adaptable machine and is simply ensuring that in times when food is scarce, it can still get enough energy to survive by ‘eating into’ the fat stores.

The keto or ketogenic diet trains the body to use stored fat as its primary energy source, instead of glucose.

Not only is this a great way to get your body to burn through fat stores, it helps prevent new ones building up.

As an added benefit, it may also help regulate blood sugar levels, which makes the keto diet a popular choice for diabetics.

Slendier – your secret weapon

If you’ve tried the keto diet, you’ll know that one of the hardest parts is giving up foods you love, like bread, rice and pasta. It’s also hard to whip up meals without some of these delicious staples – until now. Simply substitute the wheat varieties with one of Slendier’s low carbohydrate rice and pasta

products. Made from Konjac, an ancient Asian wonder food low in calories and high in dietary fibre, the range is perfect for people keen on the keto diet.
